Power of One
Single parent families are very prevalent in today’s society. They face several unique challenges. These may include:
• Financial stressors. Two incomes may be reduced to one. Child support is not always dependable. Legal assistance is not always affordable. Costly child care expenses may now be a reality.
• ParentingAs a single parent, there may be feelings of “responsibility overload”. There may be many demands and not enough hours in the day or days in the week to meet them all. The house may not be up to your standards, the children need help with their homework and the laundry is piling up. You question if everyone’s emotional needs are being met. Following through with disciplining and providing the nurturing to your children feel like they are all your responsibility. Every decision you make feels like your making it alone.
• Loss of support systemYou may lose contact with friends that you had when you were a couple. You may no longer have the support of your former spouse’s extended family members.
• Step-parents_________________________________top
Many single parents may become involved with a significant other. This often causes a disruption in the family unit. Children can resent this person’s intrusion in their lives. They may harbor an unrealistic expectation of their parents reconciling and they see this other person as a threat to this dream. They may also resent this person for trying to be a “parent” to them. Blending families can be challenging at times.
